How NR is calculated in HCL

The Formulas

HCL uses a custom Net Rating derived from each team's per-match player score spread. Here are the exact formulas:

Step 1 — Net Player Average (NPavg)

For a team T in a given match:

NPavg(T)=highest scorelowest scoren\mathrm{NP}_{\text{avg}}(T)=\frac{\text{highest score}-\text{lowest score}}{n}

where nn is the number of players who batted in that match.

Step 2 — Net Team Average (NTavg)

For the match:

NTavg=NPavg(winner)NPavg(loser)\mathrm{NT}_{\text{avg}}=\left|\mathrm{NP}_{\text{avg}}(\text{winner})-\mathrm{NP}_{\text{avg}}(\text{loser})\right|

This measures the gap between the two teams' player-score spread in that match.

Step 3 — Net Rating (NR)

Average all match-level NTavg values across completed games:

NR=1ni=1nNTavg,i\mathrm{NR}=\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n}\mathrm{NT}_{\text{avg},i}

where nn is the number of completed matches.

Worked Example

Match: SCM vs TVK — here's how the numbers break down for the winner and loser.

Winner — TVK

Player scores: 94, 67, 51, 33

NPavg=94334=15.25\mathrm{NP}_{\text{avg}} = \frac{94-33}{4} = 15.25

Loser — SCM

Player scores: 48, 24, 18, 12

NPavg=48124=9\mathrm{NP}_{\text{avg}} = \frac{48-12}{4} = 9

Match-level NTavg

NTavg=15.259=6.25\mathrm{NT}_{\text{avg}} = |15.25-9| = 6.25

These NTavg values are averaged across completed matches to produce each team's final NR value in the standings table.

Why NR Matters

  • NR is the tiebreaker when two teams finish on equal points.
  • A higher NR can push a team into playoff contention without an extra win.
  • It rewards consistency in scoring variance — keeping your spread wider than the opposition's across every match.
